Master Class: " The Horizontal World" by Susana Torres Prieto, PhD.
In recent times, the world has passed from being defined by hierarchical vertical structures in all human areas (family, work, ideology, opinion) to be increasingly ruled by structures of wider and ample base. All these changes are possibly due to the progressive democratization of Western societies. The revolution in knowledge-access created by digitalization and wide and open information access should be added to this. This new reality, which we could call horizontal, is radically different from old thinking parameters and frameworks, and sets forth challenges that, though not completely unknown in history, are happening at mind-blowing speed. The current seminar aims, rather than at giving answers, at making the right questions to approach a new reality which is, in essence, changing, moveable and polyhedral. Bearing in mind that throughout history all social and technological changes have taken several generations to be fully adopted by humans, is the human being of the 21st century mentally equipped to assume the changes of paradigm we are facing in this new horizontal world?
